Project Description

Orthopaedic Video Theater

OVT provides trusted, relevant surgical videos from globally renowned experts across the orthopaedic landscape.

Challenges

The goal of this project was to improve the process in which the user uploads a video. Our research indicated that users wanted to submit videos without having to go through the same strenuous peer reviewed method as premium content. In response, we changed the name of our premium content to OVT Plus and focused on a new feature called User-Submitted videos. The user-submitted feature gives surgeons the ability to share their latest surgical techniques without having to go through an energy-consuming process.

The upload process on OVT Plus can be completed in nine steps. The challenge was to take the same actions from the longer, and more difficult experience and add them to the new soft review form. My objective was to pay close attention to the most intense points of the upload process and make it memorable. Users generally recall bad experiences more often than the seamless ones.

The first step is the most elaborate step in the upload process. Users are required to add co-authors to their videos. This means that they need to search and add them one a time. My solution was to display a list of search results in a modal window, so users don’t have to click the back button to go back to the previous view if needed. A lead author is required before the user can continue. After doing user testing we discovered that adding the lead author was a popular pain point. Users did not understand that each author must have completed their annual disclosure as well. There was nothing in the UI implying that one was needed.

Our design team focused on this user issue explicitly. As a result, we arranged coauthors in a list view. Visual indicators were added for clarity. I used red and green colors to indicate whether the coauthor had updated disclosures in our system. The colored messaging was shown below the authors name for quick acquisition. If their disclosure was incomplete a call to action button would appear below the colored message.

Authors are added in the order in which they were selected. My hypothesis was that a user might begin to add authors and forget to select a lead author. So, a call to action was added to allow them to select a lead author out of their selected list. Once the user completes the first step the remaining required information is easy to complete. The team and I conducted usability tests both internally and externally to confirm the effectiveness of the design. The outcome was favorable. In addition to new features we also adapted components from the new Canopy Design System which members enjoyed emphatically.
